Ligustica is one of the more popular strains of honey bee. There are in fact 2 sub-varieties of the Italian honey bee and there are notable difference between the two strains. The darker colour Italian bee is more favoured for honey yields and reproduction than the more yellowish bee.
The Italian honey bee is known for its gentleness and most beekeepers find them a pleasure to handle. They display a good hygienic behaviour and their resistance to disease is very good, especially the darker sub-variety. They are less inclined to swarm, willing to enter supers and are excellent comb builders. The queens are very prolific building up to big colonies early in the season. They produce white honey cappings, are excellent honey gatherers as well as being low propolis users which are ideal characteristics for hobbyist and commercial beekeepers alike.
There are a few drawbacks, they have a strong urge for brood reading regardless of nectar flow and they have a poorer sense of orientation meaning they are more prone to drifting and robbing than other races. They also need notably more stores in preparation for winter, but they do over-winter extremely well.
These F1 Queens originate from Romania, they are the darker colour sub-variety. All our queens are naturally open mated. We do not sell artificially inseminated queens (AI).
All our queens come marked, Blue for 2020.
